Presentation Movies
These are a list of some of the movies from the OpenDoc CD shown at the April meeting.
What is OpenDoc?
"OpenDoc is a multiplatform software architecture that simplifies the way people develop and use software. It breaks down the barriers between different applications and bridges the gap between many operating systems." (OpenDoc Home Page)
Your normal, everyday applications attempt to have everything you could ever possibly want or use all in one package. Examples of this kind of software would be something like Microsoft Word. It's a huge, monolithic application bloated with every feature you could possibly imagine. If a feature you want is not there, you have to wait until the next version.
Component Software...
OpenDoc, however, works on the principle opposite that of your normal application called component software. OpenDoc "is all made possible through a simple but powerful idea called component software. Component software is a new way of thinking about software; a more flexible way to create, revise and use software so that it works the way people do." (OpenDoc Home Page)
An OpenDoc application is called a Part or Live Object. Live Objects each focus on one key area. For example, Digital Harbor's WAV is a word processor and only a word processor. Focusing on one area greatly reduces the price compared to something like Microsoft Word. If you want to add something like a spell-checker, you just purchase a spell-checker Live Object for a minimal cost. It's easy to get a word processor with only the features that you actually want for a low cost.
