FEATURES

  • Installer 4.0 - Provides an improved 4-step software installation process that walks users through:
    • Reading important information from the Read Me file
    • Updating hard disk drivers if necessary
    • Selecting the disk where the system will be installed
    • Selecting the software that will be installed
    • NOTE: Installer 4.0 will direct Disk First Aid to automatically scan the install-to drive before performing the installation.

  • Extensions Manager 4.0 - Newest version featuring
    • Detailed descriptions of extensions and control panels
    • Ability to view, and disable/enable extensions and control panels by group according to technology. For example, viewing "by package," a user can disable all QuickTime extensions and control panels with a single click.
    • Ability to save and share configurations across groups
    • Create a text file of active extensions and control panels for troubleshooting purposes.

  • Apple System Profiler 1.1.2 - Provides user with an easy way to obtain configuration information:
    • Generates a "Customer Care Code" which can be entered into a Decoderapplication and determine the exact configuration of a customer'ssystem.
    • Allows the user to view control panels and extensions sorted by All,Apple Only, and non Apple.
    • Lists number of attached devices and IDs
    • Lists number of system folders installed on each attached device
    • Will run on all 68040 and Power Macintosh systems, including MacOS compatibles.
    • Compatible with all new CPUs delivered since version 1.0

  • OpenDoc 1.1.2 - Apple's component software automatically installed with Mac OS 7.6

  • OpenDoc Essentials Kit - Sample Live Objects (OpenDoc parts) intended to get users started with OpenDoc and Live Objects:
    • QuickDraw 3DMF Viewer: allows QD3D files to be incorporated into anyOpenDoc-aware document.
    • Image Viewer: allows PICT, GIF, JPEG, and TIFF files to be incorporatedinto any OpenDoc-aware document.
    • Apple Button editor: makes it easy to embed sounds, speech and URLs intoany OpenDoc-aware document.
    • Apple Draw container: offers basic drawing functionality.
    • Apple Audio editor: allows for recording and playback of sound in any OpenDoc-aware document

  • QuickDraw GX 1.1.5

  • QuickDraw 3D 1.0.6

  • English Text-to-Speech 1.5 - Latest version of the control panel that is part of Apple's PlainTalk technology.

  • America Online 3.0 - (separate installer on the CD) for PowerPC systems only or America Online 2.7 (separate installer also) for 68K systems.

  • DataViz MacLinkPlus Translators 8.1 - Supports translating to and from Macintosh and Windows versions of ClarisWorks 4.0 word processor, spreadsheet, and database documents.

  • Apple Internet Connection Kit 1.2 (separate CD and installer)

  • Bug Fixes & Enhancements - Includes bug fixes and enhancements from previous system updates as well as the following:
    • Large volume support - Before Mac OS 7.6, only PCI-based systems could access volumes which are greater than 4GB. Mac OS 7.6 now allows all 68040 and PowerPC-based systems to access volumes which are larger than 4GB.
    • Improved Picture Capture - Pressing cmd-shift-4 presents the user with a small cross-hair cursor to allow the user to select a rectangle to capture. The resulting PICT file consists of only the image within the selected rectangle.

USAGE REQUIREMENTS
  • Mac OS 7.6 is compatible with Mac OS applications currently available and will run on Apple Macintosh and Mac OS-compatible systems with a 68030, 68040, or PowerPC processor, excluding the Macintosh SE/30, IIx, and IIcx.
  • 16MB of total RAM is required. 8MB must be physical RAM. Virtual Memory can be used to reach 16MB total.
  • A typical installation will require about 70MB of available hard disk space.
  • NOTE: Some Mac OS features may only be available on specific computer models.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
  • The English version of Mac OS 7.6 is expected to be available in late January 1997, with other languages becoming available over the following few months.
  • The estimated retail price is US$99 for the CD-ROM version and US$129 for the floppy kit.
  • Customers can purchase System 7.6 through Claris software resellers or distributors or directly from Claris.
  • Companies and educational institutions should contact their Claris reseller, distributor, or sales agent for group licensing information.

UPGRADES
  • U.S. customers who are using any version of System 7.5 will be able to upgrade to Mac OS 7.6 for $69 (CD) or $99 (floppy) by calling the Apple Software Order Center 1-800-742-1926 and providing proof of ownership. There is an additional $6.95 shipping/handling charge and taxes may apply.
